SOP Expectations

  • AIR and STS can fulfill multiple objectives depending on the focus of the session. 

This is an opportunity for students to engage across boundaries and see past their biases as they connect with theirs and others' humanities.

Humans occupy a unique place on earth: we are hybrids of nature and culture. We have the privilege of sentience, and we are deliberative moral agents. We have been granted the ability to choose a good life, and we have freedom and awareness. Recognizing these abilities, however, renders us responsible for what we are doing to our Earth. Taking care of the Earth is our duty to each other, and our duty to our home, our life support system. Humans exist on Earth as both subject and object. Therefore, stewardship arises out of our ethical obligation to be held accountable for the actions that affect our biological needs, as well as our interactions with others. It is important that we see ourselves for our vitality, not just for our individuality. When we see ourselves as separate from the rest of the world, we open ourselves up to the opportunity for its exploitation and destruction. Understanding the complex interactions within and between communities, both human and natural, is a vital component not only of effective stewardship, but also for the cooperation and survival of humanity.
