Estuary is derived from the latin word aestuarium meaning tidal inlet. An estuary is the place where freshwater meets the ocean (saltwater) resulting in a mixing of fresh and saltwater called brackish water. The estuaries of the world act as nurseries for thousands of marine animals, they provide a safe area for animals to mate and young to grow large enough to survive in the larger ocean.
